The Leaf is Here

Yesterday we went to Premier Nissan or San Jose and picked up our new Leaf. It took a couple hours to do the paper work and for the dealer to give us a pretty complete introduction. Then I drove off in the fully charged leaf.

First impressions, zippy, snappy, a little funny looking, cool electronics, nice Bluetooth integration, too bad there was no leather option.

The kids love it. They wanted to play inside the car and my 6 year old son asked if he could drive it.

We cannot apply for the white carpool lane sticker until after I get a license plate number (which can take over 30 days). Hmmm... What to do until the sticker comes?

Last night we took the leaf out to dinner. It was a short drive, which is probably the super sweet spot of savings with this. The leaf will become the car of choice for short drives.

Today we took it to a movie and used the Valet at the Oakridge Mall to park. Funny thing is that when we picked it up, he had another leaf key in his hand...

The real good story is that I took my mother and rwo kids for a ride this afternoon. We went up a pretty hilly portion of Route 9 and then through some very hilly, windy back roads. The car was fun to ride. It handled well (not like our BMW, but it was respectable) and I love that electric motor acceleration. It accelerated just fine going up hill. I felt no lag when I hit the accelerator.

So far the verdict is... Loving my Leaf

Going Electric

The wait is nearly over. My charger was installed in our garage today. I first got in line for a Nissan Leaf about four months ago and I am three weeks from delivery. I am excited to be free of gas stations, at least for my commute.

Our Garage Charger

Why am I going electric? I wish I could say this started because I wanted to save the earth. On the contrary, I got fed up one day with my commute. California allows an unlimited number of 100% alternative fuel cars to get white carpool lane stickers and the Leaf qualifies while the Volt does not because it still has a gas engine. Even under the new limited plug in hybrid plan California has for next year the Volt will not qualify because it's emissions while using the gas engine. The plug in Prius will, but that is next year.

I have a 15 mile commute so the 2-way 30 miles drive should be well in range. My guess is that I will save 20 to 50 minutes on the road a day until 2015 when hopefully there will be enough electric cars on the road that the will discontinue the program (hopefully for the planet not for my personal self interest). If only there were a special lane past all the Google traffic on my off ramp to work.I have many unanswered questions:

  1. Will I get rid of my gas guzzler?
  2. What happens when I want to go out after work?
  3. The San Jose airport is well within two-way range, but will I depend on an open charger at the San Francisco airport?
  4. Will I risk the carpool lane while I wait for my sticker?
  5. What car will I be driving a year from now?

I will update this blog as I discover the answers, come across more questions and free myself from Gas.
